about

Throughout the 1960s a group of students were at the forefront of Venezuela’s jazz scene. Comprised mainly of engineering students from the Central University of Venezuela, Conjunto Ingeniería (The Engineering Group) were helping put big band music on the map in Venezuela, and they had a couple of aces up their sleeves: 1) their boundless energy and enthusiasm, meaning they were always looking to experiment and push the limits of what a jazz orchestra can do; and 2) through links to New York they knew about all the developments happening north, way before anyone else. You can hear both of these elements on this latest single from El Palmas Music’ compilation of their finest
songs, culled from the three albums that the group released in the 1960s. “Intermission Riff” is the very same song that Stan Kenton performed in the 1940s, a stately swing track that perhaps would be filed in the easy listening category these days. However, Conjunto Ingeniería’s version is anything but easy.

Originally featuring on their 1967 album, Boogaloo Con Ingenieria, which took its cues from the boogaloo that Pete Rodriguez, Tito Puente and Ricardo Ray were trailblazing in New York City, the group infuse the song with rhythm. Where once it was swinging, now it’s vibrating, oscillating, damn it’s almost falling off its chair. The horn section is full of intent, the percussion insistent, the piano falling over itself to get people moving. It’s easy to understand why the students were so in-demand in the 60s, where they were regulars at clubs, university dances, quinceañera parties, carnival and anywhere else where music, and good times, were needed.

“Intermission Riff” features on Conjunto Ingeníería - Compiled by El Palmas & El Dragón Criollo, a 12-track compilation of the Venezuelan group’s best work.
